Whom shall I send and who will go for us?
What an inquiring question it is. And it was directed primarily to Isaiah the prophet of God and then to all with a willing heart to carry out a duty. As for Isaiah, the response was a quick one, “Here am I, send me”.
At another time God said, ‘But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.” Jesus likens a man with a humble heart to the spirit of a child. He said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
The call to duty by God is not a compulsory one but to a willing heart. Apart from Isaiah, the following people: Moses, Jeremiah, Jonah (to name but a few), were very reluctant when asked by God to carry out a duty. However, despite their reluctance, God revealed to them that He is really all powerful and nothing is too hard for him.
Brethren and sisters, I am sure we are all aware of the fact that when we responded to God’s call it made us special people to him. Being special we need also to show God our speciality by responding to whatever He wants us to do for him.
Since we are followers of Christ, the spirit of Christ has to be reflected in the life of each one of us. You remember when Jesus had commissioned his disciples to go into all the world and proclaim the gospel, he was sending people that he knew. That commission is still relevant to us. Are we ready to rise up to the call to duty as Isaiah was? “Here am I, send me”.
