Let Us Be Time-Conscious
We read in Genesis, “So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law who
were to marry his daughters, ‘Up! Get out of this place, for the Lord
is about to destroy the city” (19:14-19). But he seemed to his
sons-in-law to be jesting.
As morning dawned, the angels
urged Lot, saying, “Up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are
here lest you be swept away in the punishment of the city”. But he
lingered, so the men seized him and his two daughters by the hand, the
Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out, and they said,’
Escape for your life’. And Lot said to them, ‘Oh, no, my lords. Behold
your servant has found favour in your sight, and you have shown great
kindness in saving my life. But I cannot escape to the hills lest the
disaster overtake me and I die.’
What we learn from all this
is that Lot was warned to escape because the city was going to be
destroyed, but he did things slowly, wasting time, until he was brought
out by the angels themselves.
In our life we always plan
things well but we waste a lot of time postponing things until the next
day, next month, next year, till we lose interest in doing something
that would perhaps have been very helpful to other people.
Timely planting always gives greater yields in our fields, as it has
been said, “The early bird catches the worm” and “A sluggard’s hand
will never win the war”. The word of God has warned us to abstain from
sin but still look back: “Remember your creator in the days of your
youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you
will say, I have no pleasure in them”(Ecc 12:1).
We keep from
going to Ecclesial meetings on Sunday giving reasons that we are doing
this and that. Let us do timely things without delay, before it’s too
late.
