The First Sign of the Lord

Jesus, first miracle was the turning of water into wine at Cana (John2:1-11). Even the name “Cana” seems to imply resurrection, for it signifies the place of reeds, coming from a root word signifying to erect, to cause to stand up.

This marriage reminds us of the coming marriage of Christ to his bride after the resurrection. The wine at the marriage feast had run out and Mary, Jesus’ mother, said to the servants, “Whatsoever he says to you, do it.” The water pots stood for the righteousness of the Law which, however, could not provide joy and happiness at the marriage feast. Christ’s first miracle turned water into wine, the symbol of rejoicing in new life. Moses also by a miracle turned water into blood (Exodus 7:17).
