Mauritius Visit
| Sis Vanessa Floyd (Port Elizabeth, South Africa)
I
t had been with some trepidation that
Michael and I visited after an eight year
absence. The Ecclesia, established in the late
50’s thanks to the work of Bro Hubert
Thorneloe and the hard work of Bro Frances
Georges, also bore much fruit with many of
his converts now running the ecclesia. Bro
Leon Shuker from Yeoville joined us for the
first few days. Having arrived at the magnifi-
cent new Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam
airport, we then sped like freed birds down
the very posh
highway towards
Flic en Flac. As we
neared our destina-
tion, the traffic
was dreadful; our
route through
Quatre Bornes was
terrible but we
finally made it to
the self catering
Blue Lotus Villas.
Next evening we
attended the
Tuesday Bible class
at the hall. Herold, the Recording Brother,
and his wife Lallita, arrived on their motor
bike to open up. It was wonderful to renew
fellowship with many young and old faces we
had not seen for such a long time. The singing
of hymns with much zeal was led that evening
by Phanuel Marie Jeanne, a 10 year old who
played the organ with gusto. We loved the
whole hearted singing from their own hymn
book; a selection of English ‘Praise The Lord’
and other French hymns. Bro Leon spoke on
Romans which was
translated by Patrice
Abraham.
We have been quite
puzzled by the lack of
plugs in sinks and
tried without success
to find one in the
shops and market. Our
current theory is that
Hindus, by far the
majority on the
island, insist on
running water for
religious reasons.
