Prophetic Accuracy

The accuracy of God’s prophecies keep on amazing me. I would like to draw out a few examples.

Joshua pronounced a curse when the Israelites destroyed the city Jericho, this curse was on anyone who rebuilt the city: “Cursed before the Lord is the man who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho: ‘At the cost of his first born son will he lay its foundation; at the cost of his youngest will he set up its gates.” (Joshua 6:26).

We also read: “In Ahab’s time, Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho. He laid its foundations at the cost of his firstborn son Abiram, and he set up its gates at the cost of his youngest son Segub, in accordance with the word of the Lord spoken by Joshua son of Nun” (1 Kings 16:34). Probably those who followed this prophecy came to realize the truthfulness of it all.

We read that “Elisha said, ‘Hear the word of the Lord. This is what the Lord says, About this time tomorrow, a seah (about 7 litres) of flour will sell for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel’. The officer on whose arm the king was leaning said to the man of God, ‘Look, even if the Lord should open the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?’ ‘You will see it with your own eyes’ answered Elisha, ‘but you will not eat any of it. (2 Kings 7:1,2). And in 2 Kings 7:17,18, “Now the king had put the officer on whose arm he leaned in charge of the gate, and the people trampled him in the gateway, and he died just as the man of God had foretold when the king came down to his house. It happened as the man of God had said to the king: ‘About this time tomorrow, a seah of flour will sell for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria”.

What had been said to Elisha came to pass exactly. So the hand of God was at work. God works for those who truly believe him. No human prophecy can predict exact outcomes. There may be coincidences here and there but that is not true about the work of God.

There are also several predictions which have been said and come to pass. We have Pharaoh’s dreams interpreted by Joseph and were fulfilled. In the same way, we have Daniel interpreting Nebuchadnezzar’s dream and coming to pass as was said. We also have prophecies on the birth of Christ being fulfilled at his birth. Also included are those of his sufferings due to torture prior to his crucifixion. There are many more that are the works of God which are fulfilled without any doubt.
