Solid Foundation – the Sunday School

Like a house built on a strong foundation which will not be moved by floods or strong winds so will be a church built on a strong footing. What is this strong footing? I am here talking about a Sunday School. There is an English saying which says, ‘Capture them and teach them while young.’

Footballing nations have academies where they capture young and promising footballers and impart to them the basics of the game. The results: great footballers and consistent teams. Now to Christian life: I believe the best we can do is to have strongly supported Sunday Scholars.

It is therefore a challenge to us all to have our children taught from an early age, teaching from the book of life – THE BIBLE. The Bible is the best book to teach good conduct and higher standards acknowledged by God. The Bible says, “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old enough, he will not depart from it” (Prov 22:6). Further instruction is found in 4:1-6.

What is the result of all this toil of teaching our children while young? God says in answer “He holds victory in store for the upright. He is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones” (Proverbs 2:7,8).

Our children can only be spiritually strong if we start at a tender age, to feed them with spiritual milk and then introduced them to solid food. This emphasises the importance of the Sunday School. It can be likened to a new-born baby who initially knows nothing, is breast-fed, learns how to sit, crawl, stand, walk and then run.

So a church built on a strong Sunday School will surely be unshakeable and will not collapse but will live by the commandments of God.
