Spiritual Ears and Eyes

Eyes and ears – how could we see and hear the beautiful things God has created without them? We often read in the Bible about spiritual ears and eyes which the disciples didn’t always understand, and it is the same with us today. In Matt. 13:10 the disciples questioned Jesus, “Why speakest thou unto them in parables?” He answered, (v 13), “Because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand”. And in Isa. 6:9-10 we read, “Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed” (see also Acts 28:27)

Today in the world of Christianity many are still deceived by what they hear and see; they believe that which is not scriptural. One of the main reasons why it is easier to be deceived is the lack of knowledge and understanding of the Scriptures sent by God, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God” (2 Tim. 3:16) and, “No prophecy of the Scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:20-21).

What the eyes see and the ears hear and the flesh feels are only present realities of the mind. But for us, as our range of recognition extends, the distant, unseen things are become facts.

Unfortunately, few only understand what the spiritual eyes see because their eyes can only deal with what they can actually see and sense what they can feel. In Gen. 3:7 after Adam and Eve had disobeyed God, their eyes were opened.

As we struggle with our human nature, let us meditate on what the apostle James says (1:23-25), “For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass. For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But who looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”
